The tag on the product is the only thing standing between a sale and a stock loss — so choosing the right retail security tag matters. This guide breaks down hard tags vs soft labels, when to use each, and how the right tagging strategy protects margin without hurting the customer experience.
Every EAS tagging system uses one of two main tag formats — or a mix of both:
Hard tags are rigid plastic tags — usually 4–6 cm long — that attach to merchandise with a pin or lanyard. They are removed at the till with a magnetic detacher, then reused on the next item. Common hard tag types include:
Soft labels are thin adhesive stickers with a printed EAS circuit inside. They're applied at the source — either at the till or in the back of house — and deactivated by passing them over a deactivator pad at the point of sale. Soft labels are single-use.
Soft labels are ideal for:
The right tag depends on your product, price point, and how the item is displayed. Use this quick rule of thumb:
Hard tags cost more upfront — typically R5 to R15 each — but they can be reused hundreds of times. Soft labels are cheap per unit (often under R1) but are single-use.
For a clothing boutique, the per-tag cost drops to under 5 cents per use after a few rotations. For a supermarket with high-volume, low-margin items, soft labels are usually more cost-effective overall.
Many retailers use both: hard tags on clothing and accessories, soft labels on health, beauty, and packaged goods.
Some products need more than a standard tag:
Wine and liquor stores face unique challenges — bottles are easy to tuck into a bag and disappear. Bottle tags clamp around the neck of the bottle and require a magnetic detacher at the till. They're reusable and visually signal that the product is protected.
For boxed electronics, blenders, and large packaged goods, spider wraps use adjustable cables to encase the entire box. Removing the wrap without a detacher takes time — and that delay is often enough to stop an opportunistic thief.
For high-theft electronics and small metal items, foil bags add a second layer: the bag itself triggers an alert at the door if the item isn't checked out. Pair with an EAS tag for double protection.
Hard tags need a magnetic detacher at every till — without one, your staff can't remove the tags and your customers can't leave. Soft labels need a deactivation pad that switches the label off when the item is scanned.
